Jesus Christ

The most humble person who ever lived

Reading the Bible last night, I was struck by the words, Jesus humbled himself. He chose to be meek by making Himself of no reputation. He who is God took on the form of a bondservant and lived in the likeness of man. He humbled Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross.

The apostle Paul addressed the church in Philippi about the humility of Christ, saying:

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

Philippians 2:5–8

God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die on a cross so that we would be set free and have eternal life.

With that kind of love, you would wonder why everyone is not running into the arms of God?

— PRIDE

People don’t come to God because of their pride. And I am no different. I only came back to God when my life was in shreds. I was brought to my knees, but even then, I was stubborn — wanting to be in control.

I don’t know how God did it, but by His grace and mercy he chipped away at my pride until I was His.

But that was not the end of my pride. Even after my salvation, it raised its ugly head again but I have learned not to like it as I know how God hates pride.

I have made a decision to be constantly on alert for pride in my heart.

Pride wrecks lives. It breaks relationships and brings destruction everywhere.

We don’t have to look too far to see destruction on a mass scale today.

Do not be deceived, the devil is real and he works in the hearts and minds of men, women, and children. Pride is in the heart of man since the fall of Adam, so we must consciously make a decision to humble ourselves, as Jesus did.

Don’t forget how Satan came into being. He came to earth because He tried to be above God. He had a great position in heaven, but he went against God’s authority and got kicked out of heaven.

Satan is a fallen angel who God allows to have only temporary power on earth.

Jesus’ Humility

There are many examples of Jesus’ humility in the Bible, but I will only share three. He was humble in every action. If you want to learn how to be humble, read the gospels and see how Jesus lived his life. He is our role model and he even tells us that.

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Matthew 11:29

3 Examples of Jesus’ Humility

1. He washed His disciple’s feet

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come and he would soon have to leave His disciples whom He loved.

“The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” — John 13: 2–17

2. He rode into Jerelusum on a donkey

As the King of the Jews, Jesus chose to ride on a donkey, not a big chariot that would be fitting for a king. Jesus was not poor, He could ask the father for anything, but this was how it was to be. It was the plan of God.

Jesus knew his mission was almost complete, so he arrived in Jerusalem for the annual Passover celebration.

“As they came near Jerusalem, Jesus told two of His disciples to go into a nearby village and bring a donkey that would be waiting there. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Crowds of people spread their coats on the ground in front of Him. Some waved branches of palm trees, a sign of victory. The people shouted;

Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord –
the King of Israel!

The people wanted Him to be their king, but they had no understanding of who Jesus really was.

3. He died on a cross to save humanity

The greatest demonstration of love ever.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:15, KJV

Why be humble?

Nobody wants to be humble today. It is one of the least sought-after virtues. Everyone wants to be seen and recognized. We are a self-absorbed society and we’re getting worse. Even the most humble of us have self-centered motives for doing good.

The most important reason to be humble is that God asks us. It is part of the spiritual pathway of dying to self. There is no other way into the kingdom of God.

But, even though it is hard for us, we will be rewarded. God loves to reward the humble.

In fact, He exalts the humble and resists the proud.

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

James 4:10

Final thoughts —

Not everyone understands the story of what happened after Jesus rose from the dead. Most just say, Jesus rose and is alive today, but they don’t reflect on it.

When Jesus drew His last breath on the cross at calvary, immediately the Father gave ALL authority to Him in heaven and on earth. This is why the name of JESUS is all-powerful because He has been given all the honor and glory.

That is why He deserves all our thanks and praise.

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9–11
